Il y a une spongiose aiguë et une perte des cellules épithéliales. Le dermis dégénère, et il y a une hyperémie, des hémorragies et une infiltration inflammatoire. Dans le stage avancé, une sarcolyse est évidente. Une couche de cellules enferme les filaments fongiques et la grannulations mycosique se propage à travers le muscle et les organes internes. Les fibres musculaires disparaissent et sont remplacées par des cellules inflammatoires, une fibrose et de nouveaux vaisseaux sanguins.<br />

L’analyse histologique suffit au diagnostic définitif de la maladie.<br />

Des préparations écrasées de muscle squelettique démontre des filaments fongiques et permettent un diagnostic rapide.<br />
